Despite some media reports to the contrary, DMX did not “smuggle drugs” into prison, according to both a representative for DMX and a spokesman for the Arizona Department of Corrections.
Though the public inmate record for DMX (real name: Earl Simmons) shows a disciplinary infraction on June 30 for failing or refusing a drug test, and an infraction April 5 for possession of drugs or narcotics, ADOC spokesman Barrett Marson told media, “He did not smuggle drugs into prison. He failed a drug test. I don’t know what drugs he took, but that’s it. He…will now be released on July 19th.”
Phoenix New Times spoke with DMX’s manager this morning, and are working to procure an interview with the rapper regarding the drug allegations within the next few days. Back in January, Phoenix New Times chronicled DMX’s tribulations in a cover story, and also debuted exclusive unreleased DMX tracks on Up on the Sun.
