Number 87: Pop Cho and Sweet Ginger at The Breadfruit

For anyone who still thinks that vegetarian food can’t be stick-to-your-ribs and flat-out tasty, I suspect that they haven’t been to The Breadfruit, and they surely haven’t tried the pop cho.

Although downtown’s upbeat Jamaican restaurant has plenty of meat-free options, pop cho with sweet ginger is one that’s as comforting as it is healthful.

A giant heap of mashed sweet potatoes, bolstered with roasted garlic, is the most substantial part of the dish, complimenting a pile of sauteed bok choy in an alluring sauce of rum, rice vinegar, rosemary, onion, and tangy-sweet pickled ginger. Inhale deeply and don’t be surprised when the aroma makes you lick your chops.
