Wait, what? Katy Perry is being considered too sexy for China? And Lady Gaga is too controversial, you say? That’s unheard of! Well, not if you have any say in Chinese cultural authority.
Katy Perry’s hit “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” as well as six songs by Lady Gaga have been blacklisted and must be removed from Chinese websites by September 15 because the Ministry of Culture did not approve them. It is unknown why approval was not granted. Even the Backstreet Boys’ song “I Want It That Way” didn’t meet the ministry’s standards.
Censorship in countries like China is obviously not a new concept, but now that America’s biggest pop artists are in the picture, the issue is gaining some additional attention.
