For Phoenix artist Jeff Slim (Diné) inspiration abounds.
“I like to use bright colors and an illustrative approach when painting,” he says, adding that he draws on comic books, literature, and cultural and family stories when creating his works.

His mural work, seen recently at The Hive and at Stepping Stone Place, shows two sides of his style: One abstract and expansive, the other contained, yet expressive.
And it’s no surprise that, given his wide interests, his April 2014 solo show at Willo North incorporated music from DJ Byron Fenix and Tucson band Deathscene. Certainly, musical accompaniment made all the more lively his kinetic paintings that run rampant with lines and angles.
I came to Phoenix with a bag of clothes and an optimistic perspective.
I make art because it’s a natural reaction to prevent boredom.
I’m most productive when I’m left to my own devices.
My inspiration wall is full of miscellaneous nostalgia.
I’ve learned most from the people who were in and out of my life.
Good work should always be followed by a humble moment of accomplishment.
The Phoenix creative scene could use more acceptance and encouragement from those outside of the “creative scene”.
