On July 20, Kellie Walker and her Voices Lifted choir packed their songbooks and headed to Dobson Home — one of three homes overseen by Hospice of the Valley.
Walker, along with choir members Rebecca Riggs, Nancy Wittenberg and Melissa Bush, sing regularly for a number of patients and their family members. Their story and practice is described in this week’s feature Facing the Music, by Kholood Eid.

The women’s first stop was Carol Beck’s room, where the women sang for Beck and her niece, Amanda Klimczak.
Walker’s mission with Voices Lifted is to comfort and console those in pain, be it the person lying in the hospice bed or their relatives sitting nearby. By chance, the group performed a childhood favorite for Beck and Klimczak — “Edelweiss,” from The Sound of Music.
“That brought back memories of when I was a kid,” Beck said. “Thank you very much for that.”
Carol Beck died on August 19. She was 62.
