When we last put the spotlight on 100 creative forces in Phoenix, it was no secret there were more than 100 individuals who were making waves in the local arts community. So in celebration of our Best of Phoenix issue, we’re profiling 100 more. Welcome (back) to 100 Creatives.
Bob Roman describes himself as a bit of a vagabond, and the Phoenix metro area as the closest thing he has to a geographical notion of home. He travels, draws, gives Ignite talks, and encourages everyone he meets to wander.
“I place a premium on new experiences and try to keep my life in perspective with the idea that experiencing more will leave me open to fullness that is evasive in the routine,” he says. “Always on to another adventure.”
I came to Phoenix with … a Bible under my arm. I graduated high school in 2002 and came out to Tempe to go to a small (tiny) Bible college. I dropped out and went on to become a youth pastor in Southern California. Always amazed at where I’ve ended up since.
I make art because … I need to participate in shared space in a meaningful way. You don’t need permission to change the cultural use of shared space. Participating in the social contract shouldn’t mean that you have to see advertisements everywhere you look. If you’ve got a dissenting opinion, let’s hear about it. Stop asking permission and start making this the world you want to live in.
I’m most productive when … I’m surrounded by imaginative and creative people who are in an imaginative creative state as well. Mutual cooperation leads to mutual benefit. It’s nice to listen to poet friends share their work or listen to songs my musician friends are breathing life into. I’m always the best version of myself when I’m in good company and in lifted spirits.
My inspiration wall is … a bathroom stall covered in paint and marker. Do justice.
I’ve learned the most from … Matthew McConaughey in How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days.
Good work should always … feel good. As a creator, the Process is infinitely more layered and meaningful than any tangible object that is the result of it. It’s nice to create and give life to ideas plucked out of a sea of infinite possibilities. What a wild fucking idea.
The Phoenix creative scene could use … some more local support. There’s no reason local art shops like Wet Paint should be going under in a place like this. We need to watch out for one another. We’re in this thing together.
The Creatives, so far … (And while you’re here, check out 100 Tastemakers on Chow Bella.)
