Books have long served as moviemakers’ source material. And this year’s box office bait is literary as ever with Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, Joe Wright’s Anna Karenina, and Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit luring audiences to theaters. Cinephiles can tack Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises onto that list, too.
Nolan recently revealed that the superhero script alludes to Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities. (Those in need of a refresher, CliffsNotes will do ya fine.) That could mean Bruce Wayne will embody the self-sacrificing, “far, far better thing,” Sydney Carton type. If the source material is any indication, it will be dark, deal with classism, and probably not end happily.
The final flick in Nolan’s caped crusader triology will premiere at midnight, closing out the Ultimate Dark Knight Marathon Thursday, July 19, following Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.
Darkness falls at 6 p.m. at various Harkins Theatres including Tempe Marketplace 16. Tickets are $20.
