There was no shortage of spectacular and surreal art work at this year’s Burning Man festival in Nevada. Huge pirate ships, neon-covered Trojan Horses, and other mutant vehicles rolled around alkali flats of the Black Rock Desert during the annual event, which was held this past weekend.
Meanwhile, an eclectic selection of unusual art installations and sculptures were placed in and around the festival, including homegrown pieces created by Arizona artists like Carnegiea Gigantea (a 20-foot-tall fire-spewing wooden cactus) and the Tunnel of Questionable Enlightenment.
Some of the larger installations (including the Burning Man statue itself and the “Temple of Transition”) were set ablaze at the conclusion of the weeklong festival, leaving only photographs taken by those in attendance.
Valley burners recently returned from the event (many of whom are still cleaning the desert dust out of their belongings) and shared some of the stunning photographs they took out on the playa, including a few snapshots of locally made art.
