Once in a while we music critics get lucky and an especially stinky CD ends up in our hands… an easy target, something genuinely bad. I scored that recently, when I got my hands on some tracks by PHX rapper/R&B-er Sonny Long, whose debut album The Resume is due out early next year. He calls his style “Gumbo music” ’cause he says it’s a mixture of rap, R&B and soul, but this shit is just trite. We’ve got a rich history of soul and funk music here in the ‘Nix, like Mike Lenaburg and Hadley Murrell‘s entries to the canon back in the late ’60s and early ’70s, but Sonny Long doesn’t belong in that pantheon.
