With the help of 80 Flickr photos and a simple algorithm, Fung Kwok Pan can tell you the color of anything.
The Singapore-based artist launched a website in which participants enter a term — “Phoenix” in the case above — and within seconds, the site aggregates image data from a small collection of the online photos tagged with that term, and condenses and averages their color information.
He writes that the project is “an attempt at answering a potentially
complex and abstract question in an objective manner, by using simple
algorithms on data originating from subjective human perceptions.”
