Five Calls to Phoenix Artists

​Don’t have a good excuse to get working on a creative project? 
We’ll give you five:
1. Mural Proposals for monOrchid GallerymonOrchid owner Wayne Rainey is looking for submissions and mock ups for the west-facing wall of the downtown gallery. Fair warning: it’s no small task. 
Rainey says the wall is about 19-by-100 feet, though designs could include smaller components and collaborations. 
Pictures of designs and sketches can be posted on the monOrchid Facebook page. Rainey says that he hopes to get the community involved in a vote and that he’ll be happy to supply the paint. 

2. Etherton Gallery’s “Red” Tucson’s Etherton Gallery is inviting Arizona artists (who are at least 18 years old) to submit artwork for consideration in a juried exhibition, which will run at the same time as Arizona Theatre Company’s “Red” by John Logan. 
Gallery owner Terry Etherton and staff will be jurying submissions and will select a number of two-dimensional pieces submitted by February 1, 2012, and will notify artists by March 1, 2012. For more details, see the event page.

 
3. Plays for Space 55 Writer’s Workshop If you’d like to hear your play-in-progress read by local talent and workshopped by a (very supportive) local audience, now’s your chance. 
Space 55 is kicking off its annual Writer’s Workshop series, which will present a new work-in-progress on the third Sunday of each month at 10 a.m.. (note: free coffee, donuts, and entertainment). Submissions and questions can be sent to Space 55’s Kim Porter at kim@kimporter.net. 
4. Día de los Muertos exhibition at Phoenix Public LibraryBurton Barr Central Library is looking for artist-made Día de los Muertos altars for an exhibition in October. The show, titled  “Adorned in Memories, Written in Stone”, will showcase “ways generations of Arizonans have honored the memories of their loved ones in their hearts and in public spaces.”
Photographs and or sketches of freestanding altars that are no larger than 3-by-4-by-8.5 feet will be accepted through 5 p.m. on September 2 (along with a $5 submission fee). 5. Utrecht Art CompetitionThe national art supply company is launching its third-annual art competition. This year, Utrecht is joining forces with American Artist Magazine and Studio Incamminati, and seeking works in painting, drawing and sculpture. Utrecht will be awarding over $16,000 in prizes, including a grand prize of a six-week summer workshop scholarship to Studio Incamminati in Philadelphia. 
Submissions must be received by September 1 and winners will be notified by November 1. For more information, winning categories and requirements, see the online submission page.
