Mortal Kombat is back in the film world and this time it’s coming out swinging.

The murderously fun and violent fighting game is known better for its fatalities and worse for its movies, TV shows, and other manner of crappy self-promotion.

Director Kevin Tancharoen (Fame) however, has attempted to shake things up with the Tuesday debut of his web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy.

Tancharoen initially made waves with the premiere of his short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth in 2010.

The short showed off Mortal Kombat painted in gritty realism and featured the talents of Ian Anthony Dale and Michael Jai White. It looked like Tancharoen was ready to Nolan-ize the Mortal Kombat universe and make the silly robot ninjas and sorcerers more believable.

Now the Legacy web series is off to a running start with the first episode up for grabs on the Machinima Youtube channel.

The latest episode started off realistically enough with Jax (White) and Stryker (Tahmoh Penikett) storming a weapons warehouse to rescue Sonya Blade (Jeri Ryan) when Kano (Darren Shalavi) ambushes them. After that it devolves into a miasma of slowdowns, explosions, and canned punching noises.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy may just need more time to find its groove or might have more silliness in store in later episodes. More episodes will be released weekly on the Machinima channel.
