One new idea for every day in 2011. We’re talking big, small, local,
international, in action and on the drawing board. Here’s today’s —
what’s yours?

John Holcomb says he was a bit of a geography and state fact nerd growing up. So when the idea came three years ago to pair each US state with a recognizable food item, he was more than well prepared.

The result is The United Plates of America, an illustrated puzzle of painted edibles based on states’ sizes and shapes.

After months of fielding state-pride concerns, he’s careful to note that his project carries no political commentary and isn’t about each states’ well-known export.
