We’re not doing a “Best Phoenix Concerts of 2009” list this year — what with the economy and all, ya know? — but if I did Dead Confederate’s set at The Marquee would get serious consideration for my top 10.
As I said at the time:
Dead Confederate, who sound a little like a Bleach-era Nirvana as covered by Trail Of Dead… had moments where they looked more metal than alt-rock, the five-member band plowing through their 2008 album Wrecking Ball with minimal, but gracious, interaction with the crowd. For people who are not just sick of the water-soluble Animal Collective sound but the sad state of what passes for “rock” on the radio today, Dead Confederate are a welcome breath of fresh air. If “Sex on Fire” is the problem, “The Rat” is the solution.
So, given all that, it’s a real treat to hear the band’s new live record.

We’re aiming to raise $30,000 by December 31, so we can continue covering what matters most to you. If New Times matters to you, please take action and contribute today, so when news happens, our reporters can be there.
Dirty Ammo is available for $1 here. The brooding cover of Elliot Smith’s “Roman Candle” is definitely worth hearing, so stream that even if you don’t want to pony up a buck. The only sad thing is that there’s no live version of “The Rat” (mp3 below), the band’s best song.
