Phoenix’s R&S Mattress company just wanted to show it was excited about the prospect of free-agent quarterback Peyton Manning coming to play for the Arizona Cardinals.
As you can see in the video above, Manning’s marketing company didn’t think it was cute.
The company put the first billboard up a few weeks ago, and a couple more went up after that.
Then the mattress company got the cease-and-desist letter from the marketing company, IMG. Chuck Madler — our local mattress representative above — doesn’t seem to be too crushed about having to take his billboards going down, but he still wants Manning to “sleep here.”
Will you step up to support New Times this year?
At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $15,500 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.
The Cardinals are in the “final four” teams with a chance to land Manning, according to ESPN’s rumor mill, and the multi-city hysteria won’t be over until he signs a contract.
But if we learned anything here today, it’s that Manning’s repped by the same firm as tennis great Bjorn Borg. Also, putting up a billboard begging a superstar athlete to come to your town may not be the greatest idea.
