Despite Arizona’s reputation as a state of gun-lovers, it looks like Arizonans still support background checks for all gun sales.
That appears to be the reason why Senator Jeff Flake, who recently voted against expanding background checks for gun purchases, has “already become one of the most unpopular Senators in the country,” according to an opinion poll of Arizona voters.

Public Policy Polling — which had some pretty accurate polling numbers in Arizona from the last election — found that Flake’s approval rating among Arizonans is 32 percent, and the “net approval rating” of Flake is the worst that PPP had polled, which used to be Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
The background checks appear to be a contributing factor for hatin’ on Flake — almost all Arizona Democrats support background checks, most Independent voters do as well, as do a majority of Republicans (92 percent, 71 percent, and 50 percent, respectively).
“52% of voters say they’re less likely to support Flake in a future election because of this vote, compared to only 19% who say they’re more likely to,” PPP says in a release. “Additionally, voters say by a 21-point margin, 45/24, that they trust senior colleague John McCain more than Flake when it comes to gun issues.”
