The Arizona Republic editorialized this morning that county leadership is out of control, and says in its closing argument that “a higher, saner power must step in.”

Obviously, they’re talking about the feds — not this wimpy guy:

Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard, a Democrat, is evidently powerless against his Republican political enemies, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and County Attorney Andrew Thomas. Is it that they’ve had the state’s so-called “top cop” boxed in for two years under the cloud of a criminal investigation that has led nowhere?

As the ethically compromised Thomas and Arpaio spent the last two weeks slamming the county judicial leadership and the entire Board of Supervisors with a sketchy federal racketeering lawsuit and local criminal charges, Goddard hasn’t made a peep.

Is he scared to say what he thinks about these remarkable events? Apparently.

The former Phoenix mayor is planning to run for governor — that’s gotta be a big factor behind his silence. A head-in-the-sand approach regarding Arpaio certainly worked for former Governor Janet Napolitano, now Barack Obama’s Homeland Security secretary.

It also may be the reason we’re in the mess we’re in locally right now.

Voters will have to trust that if Goddard wins, he’ll grow some chest hair. Finally.
