Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio rolled out some details of his response to the Newtown, Connecticut shooting, which involves armed, volunteer members of his posse patrolling some Valley schools.
The power of the posse members is limited, as they’re not actual cops — a point illustrated in the late ’90s by Comedy Central, and again explored a few days ago by Stephen Lemons.

So, what’s the point? Maybe, just maybe, a posse member could stop a school massacre while making laps around a school in a patrol car.
Then there’s the distinct possibility that this is a publicity stunt.
“Let’s say it is,” Arpaio said, while standing in front of a gigantic MCSO van, parked outside an Anthem elementary school. “I want everyone to know what we’re doing out here.”
Arpaio continued, “You could say everything I do is a publicity stunt.”
