Mary Peters, the Harley-riding transportation guru who left her longtime job as director of the Arizona Department of Transportation to become Transportation Secretary under President George W. Bush, has joined the Goldwater Institute as a “senior fellow.”
Peters was considered a potential candidate for governor in 2010 until Governor Jan Brewer rose to power in the wake of Janet Napolitano’s departure.
Last year, the Teamsters accused her of allowing “unsafe” Mexican
trucks to pass through the international border and launched a campaign to
have her fired as Transportation Secretary. After Obama’s election, she
was replaced with Ray LaHood.
Here’s what her Goldwater gig will entail, according to the conservative think-tank:
Goldwater Institute Senior Fellows are selected for their exceptional knowledge, commitment to principle, and personal integrity. Fellows support the Goldwater Institute by sharing their experiences and expertise with resident scholars, assisting with research design and projects, reviewing research, writing reports, and participating in Institute roundtables, forums and conferences.
