When the parents of Jared Loughner, the 22-year-old suspect in Saturday’s shooting rampage in Tucson, issued their first statement since the incident, they did so via-a short statement given to the media by two men who refused to identify themselves to the media. New Times has discovered that one of those men is a former editor of this newspaper.
As identified by several of New Times’ elder staffers, the man in the photo to the left is former New Times editor Jeremy Voas, who now works for the Federal Public Defender’s Office.
See Loughner’s parents’ statement below:
This is a very difficult time for us. We ask the media to respect our privacy.
There are no words that can possibly express how we feel. We wish
that there were, so we can make you feel better. We don’t understand why
this happened. It may not make any difference. But we wish that we could change the
heinous events of Saturday. We care very deeply about the victims and
their families. We are so very sorry for their loss.Thank you.
The Loughner Family
As you can see, the statement doesn’t offer too much information. Because we now know the statement was delivered — and likely prepared — by
federal defense lawyers, it seems it’s likely part of the positioning of
Loughner’s attorney, which may be the reason such little information is offered.
