“Exploring the Masters of Jazz Trumpet”

One could argue that the piano is the backbone of jazz music, or the saxophone, for that matter. Names such as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane have certainly achieved household status. But have either of the two instruments bridged the great noun-to-verb divide the way the trumpet was? Has anyone ever tried to “piano” their cause? Whether the verb or the noun came first matters little. Fact is, it’s difficult to trump the trumpet when discussing idiomatically jazz instruments and musicians, from Satchmo to Miles. Which is why Dr. Jeff Libman will host a class at The Nash, 110 East Roosevelt Street, at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 8, that’s devoted entirely to “Exploring the Masters of Jazz Trumpet.” Admission is $25.
