Phoenix is one of many cities around the country in which environmentalists plan on holding “vigils” to protest the proposed Keystone XL pipeline.
Mind you, the proposed path of the pipeline doesn’t come within 1,000 miles of Phoenix.
The pipeline has been the subject of Democrat-versus-Republican debates for several years now, with the left arguing against the environmental impact and general energy policy this gigantic pipeline represents, and the right claiming to take a pro-business stance in favor of the pipeline.
These protests scheduled for today (more than 200 are planned) are in response to a State Department environmental report released last week, which found no drastic environmental impact of the multi-billion-dollar pipeline project.
This doesn’t mean the project’s going forward, or that it’s not, but it’s enough for 18 environmentalist groups to protest.
Phoenix’s edition is planned for 5 p.m. outside the Sandra Day O’Connor US Courthouse in Downtown Phoenix.
“This vigil will be peaceful and respectful,” one of the events organizer’s says in an e-mail.
The vigil is described as “an all-hands-on-deck moment to send the message to President Obama that Keystone XL fails his climate test and he must reject it. “
