A Phoenix man turned himself into police headquarters this morning and admitted he was involved in the hit-and-run collision that killed an 11-year-old boy this weekend.
Mabior Ding, 32, had an anti-theft device on his vehicle that he failed to remove before putting the car in reverse, thus being unable to hit the brake or steer, according to Phoenix Police Sergeant Trent Crump.
Police say that anti-theft device is believed to be “one contributing factor” to Ding running over the boy, who was walking with his mother Saturday evening in the parking lot of an apartment complex near 35th Avenue and Indian School Road.
A witness told police that Ding helped get the boy, Enoc Quejada, out from under his car, but left his car rolling as he walked away.
Witnesses told police that Ding may have been drunk, Crump says.
Quejada was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to a hospital, and Ding’s car, an Isuzu Amigo, rolled through a block wall before it came to a stop.
Ding, 32, was booked into jail on charges of manslaughter and leaving the scene of a fatal collision after turning himself in this morning at Phoenix PD headquarters.
