The Slide Fire burning north of Sedona has passed 20,000 acres, but the spread has been slowing, and firefighters have been able to contain more of the fire.
This morning’s estimate of the size of the fire is 20,369 acres, or about 32 square miles, and is 45 percent contained.

The fire, which started just north of Slide Rock State Park eight days ago, has been burning away from Sedona since it started, around Oak Creek Canyon area.
Yesterday morning, the fire was estimated to be about 100 acres smaller than today’s estimate. The fire had previously been growing by thousands of acres per day. There are still nearly 900 people fighting the fire, and all of the 300 structures — including homes and vacation cabins — that were considered to be threatened by the fire are still standing.
The Forest Service has said the fire is human-caused, and investigators are still seeking information from the public about the origin of the fire, or even anyone who looked suspicious around Slide Rock on May 20.
A lot of the forest lands around the fire remain closed, as does State Route 89A, between Sedona and Flagstaff.
