Governor Jan Brewer used an executive order to declare that participants in the Obama Administration’s deferred-action program can’t get driver’s licenses in Arizona.
Brewer’s order came as the program was just getting started up, as people who were brought to the United States when they were young were able to apply for work permits and temporary immunity from deportation.
ACLU of Arizona executive director Alessandra Soler told New Times yesterday that she thinks Brewer’s move “has absolutely no basis under state or federal law.”
If these people are going to be allowed to work, not being able to drive a car certainly doesn’t help them get to the work, either.
This morning’s question: Regardless of the legality of Brewer’s order, should deferred-action recipients be allowed to get Arizona driver’s licenses (which would likely expire as their work permits expired)?
