If the signatures check out, Arizona voters will vote on a ballot initiative in November that would change how primary elections operate.
Instead of Republicans voting for a Republican and Democrats voting for a Democrat to appear on the general election ballot, the proposal offers for everybody to vote for anybody in a primary, and the top two vote-getters earn a spot on the general election ballot, regardless of party affiliation.
Not surprisingly, this proposal’s already causing drama.
Word on the street is that the folks at the Legislature don’t like this proposal too much, and had been preparing a special session to add their own proposal to the ballot, possibly to counter the “top two” idea.
That plan’s since been scrapped, but not everyone’s happy about that.
