Last month, one Valley smoker got a $10,000 check for lighting up with a cannabis company’s prerolls.
Glendale resident Matthew Sabo won The Mazor Collective’s giveaway to promote its Sneakers brand. Sabo purchased a five-pack of Sneakers prerolls containing a code to enter online. On Feb. 14, Mazor Collective employees randomly picked Sabo as the winner of a $10,000 prize.
Through the company, Sabo declined to be interviewed by Phoenix New Times. But Mazor Collective shared that he’s a military veteran who didn’t believe he’d really won when the company called.
“He called and said, ‘You left me a message about winning the Sneakers thing. Is that real?'” said Mazor Collective CEO Lilach Mazor Power, whose company also runs Giving Tree Dispensary. “Matt was like, ‘I’ve never won anything.'”
About two weeks later, Matt went to Giving Tree’s location in North Phoenix with his mom to collect his big check. Mazor Power called it “one of the best days of my cannabis career.”
That Sabo is a vet also struck a chord with Mazor Power, who served in the Israeli Defense Force. She said Giving Tree has “kept 15-20% of our workforce as veterans since inception” in 2013.
“It’s fun no matter who won, but it made it so much more special to give it to a veteran who could very much use it,” Mazor Power said. “This is a life-changing event.”
The Mazor Collective conceived of the giveaway contest as a way to drum up business during a time of sinking revenue. For months, weed prices have been dropping across the Valley in what she described as “a race to the bottom.” Instead of continuing to battle with other weed brands on who can provide the cheapest products to smokers, Mazor Power hoped the chance at winning a fistful of dollars would nudge sales.
No specific plans are in the works, but Mazor Power hopes her company will make the giveaway an annual occurrence. So if you smoked a lot of Sneakers prerolls and didn’t get rich, hang tight. You’ll likely have another chance to green out.
