Just over a week after the sudden closure of eight Filiberto’s Mexican Food restaurants around the Valley, the eateries are on track to reopen.
The restaurants that closed earlier this month were owned and operated by Compadres Group. The restaurants shuttered after owner John Schwimmer experienced personal “unforeseen medical issues,” according to Cesar Tenorio, a member of the family that founded Filiberto’s in 1993.
Luis Espinoza, a commercial real estate broker representing the restaurant group, confirmed GILE Commercial Real Estate is in the process of securing leases on the locations spanning from Peoria to Gilbert and Scottsdale to Avondale.

Customers were met with “Closed” signs at multiple Filiberto’s locations earlier this month.

Closed Filiberto’s locations set to reopen:
- 2955 N. 91st Ave., Phoenix
- 17224 N. 19th Ave., Phoenix
- 10749 E. Apache Trail, Apache Junction
- 1440 N. Dysart Road, Avondale
- 930 E. Pecos Road, Chandler
- 1397 E. Williams Field Road, Gilbert
- 13972 N. 83rd Ave., Peoria
- 9150 E. Indian Bend Road, Scottsdale
Espinoza expects the leases on these properties will be finalized in the next one to two weeks. The broker said that members of the Tenorio family will take over these locations and the restaurants are anticipated to reopen on or around July 1.
Earlier this month, would-be diners were greeted with “closed” signs hung on windows, doors and drive-thru menu boards at the shuttered locations, despite online listings showing six of the eight as open. Those diners took to Reddit, Yelp and Google to share their frustration at driving to a restaurant, only to find similar vague notifications of closures. Readers continued to sound off with their own theories about the closures after the news broke.
Soon, the shuttered Filiberto’s locations will again offer country breakfast burritos, lunchtime taco plates and late-night rolled tacos from the ubiquitous 24/7 drive-thrus.
“We just appreciate people’s patience,” Tenorio said. “But we’ll be back up and running and serving the community here as soon as possible.”
