Remember the days when 25 cents could buy you two tickets to the movies and an extra large popcorn?

Fortunately for thrifty thrill-seekers, there’s still plenty of no-cost events happening around town. From free film screenings to nature discussions and spoken word performances, here are our top three picks for complimentary events in the Valley this week.

Join the ASU Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability as it hosts a free screening of Wrenched, a documentary that explores the evolution of eco-activisim beginning with author Edward Abbey to the next generation of wilderness defenders. Wrenched will screen 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) on Tuesday, September 9, at Harkins Valley Art. Visit the ASU event online for more information and to RSVP.
Spectacular Nature: Petrified Wood
Mother nature is more than just a pretty face, which is why Tempe Center for the Arts is hosting the free fall series Spectacular Nature: The Natural World Illuminated through Unique Specimens. From 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 10, visitors can get an up-close look at the many types of petrified wood native to Arizona as well as specimens from around the world. Uptown P.E.N. at Practical Art
A picture is worth a thousand words. But a thousand words? That’s completely free. From 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 9, Practical Art and Jake Friedman will host an evening of community poetry, flash fiction, and other performance wordplay. Uptown P.E.N. will feature the works of Melissa Tramuta and reserve roughly an hour of open-mic time for other aspiring wordsmiths to share their material.
