Robert Putnam famously used bowling to demonstrate the decay of social interaction in the United States, observing that even though more people go bowling in the United States today than in the 1950s there are significantly fewer bowling leagues. There’s some dispute over whether Putnam was correct about Americans becoming more isolated. But there is no dispute that there are not enough bowling leagues — at least for anyone who saw the “Team Homer” episode of The Simpsons.
If you’re looking to build your social capital — or like the idea of competitive bowling — you might check out PBR Bowling at Tempe Village Lanes, 4407 South Rural Road, Tuesday, January 8. The only gimmicks to speak of are some coupons and a bunch of free beer gear for the entrants.
Tuesdays, 5:30 p.m. Starts: Jan. 8. Continues through April 23, 2013
