Yetis aren’t exactly common main characters in children’s literature — blame their bad rap on the many tales of their legendarily not-so-nice cousins, bigfoot and the abominable snowman. But with a few paintbrushes and a heartwarming storyline, local artist Jennifer Campbell and writer/filmmaker Troy Harris were determined to give the mythological creature a softer side.

The two created Yeti Leaves Home, an illustrated children’s book, by hand. Harris wrote the tale and Campbell used watercolor and ink to capture the adventure of a yeti on his path to growing up.

The two successfully raised $5,000 to publish the book, and on May 11, Practical Art will host a free reception for the book and for 25 of Campbell’s yeti-themed watercolors, which will be on display through Thursday, May 31. The book will be available for $30, and snacks and refreshments will be served.
