“I dreamed of New York, I am going there,” Sylvia Plath wrote in a diary.
When the aspiring writer was in college and 21 years old, she spent a month working as an intern at Mademoiselle in New York, living at the Barbizon, and experiencing the city. Though it’s hard to imagine the author of The Bell Jar in the midst of the glitz and glamour of a fashion magazine and all its frivolity, Elizabeth Winder explores this 26-day period of Plath’s life in her biography Pain, Parties, Work: Sylvia Plath in New York, Summer 1953.

Winder, a poet herself, details that month of Plath’s life and how it shaped the remainder of it. She’ll discuss and sign the book at Phoenix Art Museum Friday, October 11, during Arizona Costume Institute Nouveau’s 1950s-themed fundraiser benefitting the museum’s fashion gallery.
ACI Nouveau is the under-35 division of the Arizona Costume Institute with members who are fashion enthusiasts. The group works to raise money and awareness for ACI, as well as the museum’s prestigious fashion collection.
The lecture begins at 7 p.m. Signed copies of Winder’s book will be available for purchase. After the talk, during which Winder will provide insight into Plath’s experiences in the ’50s fashion world and how they impacted her, light snacks will be available, along with cocktails at a cash bar. DJ Kim E-Fresh will spin, while the Saks Fifth Avenue cosmetics team will give Dior makeovers. Gift bags will be furnished by Saks and Kendra Scott Jewelry.
