There are those of us who will do almost anything to hear someone sing “Alfie,” arguably the most famous and most-often-recorded of Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s many hundreds of pop standards. We (who also don’t mind hearing “What the World Needs Now Is Love,” “Baby It’s You,” and the occasional chorus of “This Guy’s in Love With You”) will be joined this week and next by hundreds of others who are willing to brave a world-première book musical titled Love Sweet Love that’s set to the tunes of the country’s most prolific and popular songwriting duo. Author C. Ben Wolfe wrapped 31 of those Bacharach-David songs around a story about four women on a love hunt in Los Angeles. As Valentine’s Day approaches, the gals go looking for romance, and you can bet that one will find it with a guy whose full name is Alfred, if you catch my drift.
