Some people think Phoenix’s music scene needs spicing up. All we gotta say to that is be careful what you wish for.

For example, it probably wouldn’t be wise to go all Scandinavian black metal on our local venues and personalities. That’s because, according to the flick Until the Light Takes Us (2009), the Scandinavian black metal world (especially in countries like Norway) is chockfull of death and double-crossing ploys. The controversial documentary chronicles the roots of the brutal music and ideologies that were forged along with the unabashed sounds, all of which came to a head with the 1994 slaying of Øystein Aarseth by Mayhem bandmate Varg Vikernes. (In May 2009, Vikernes was released from prison on probation.)
