Though all indications suggest that San Francisco-based Two Gallants’ new album The Bloom and the Blight shows marked progress in song craft and overall production, the band’s fulcrum is (and always has been) their lyrical prowess. Ever seeking that perfect crescendo when lyrical mood perfectly conjoins with musical mood, the Bay area rockers are earnestly aware of the importance of this coupling, placing it atop their priority list at the onset of every song’s conception.

Though the duo’s bare-bones presentation, à la The Black Keys, occasionally lacks the oomph that a more robust outfit might convey, Bloom marks a prodigious leap in the band’s journey towards the ultimate summit, where the whimsies of mere instrumentation become sonic specks on a soundscape far below.
