Trying to find a worthwhile outdoors event in Phoenix this time of year is like trying to offer constructive criticism to Amy’s Baking Company — downright impossible. While many venues simply batten down the hatches, send their event planners on vacay, and write off the scorch fest as a loss, Ahwatukee’s The Foothills Golf Club, 2201 East Clubhouse Drive, brazenly hosts one of its premier events every June. What’s more shocking, it’s successful. Maybe it’s because enough of us have yet to succumb to the doldrums-inducing Arizona summer, or maybe it’s because the annual Wine & Beer Tasting Festival is one helluva party.

With several of the Valley’s finest restaurants on hand offering appetizer tasting and enough wine and beer tasting to make Al Roker forget the weather, the fest sets an awfully high bar for competing summer parties. Fortunately for them, there aren’t many. The 21-and-over event starts at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 1. Tickets start at $40. Visit www.folaz.org for details.
