The only thing better than a play by Douglas Carter Beane is a play by Douglas Carter Beane — the author of As Bees in Honey Drown, the Broadway musical Xanadu, and the movie To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar — presented by Nearly Naked Theatre. Therefore, the Valley première of Beane’s The Little Dog Laughed is something of an event.
That event will overflow with the sort of wicked yuks Beane and Nearly Naked are known for. This time around, in a black comedy nominated for the 2007 Tony Award for Best Play, Beane brings us a hot young Hollywood leading man who’s driving his posse crazy by refusing to stay in the closet. The actor’s agent’s latest challenge with the oh-so-out star involves a hooker who’s taken the star’s fancy and the hooker’s girlfriend, who’s mucking everything up.
