Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald is slated to attempt something out of the ordinary in public on Thursday, September 20, and you can join him without painting your chest. Phoenix Symphony’s new season kicks off, and ol’ Sticky Fingers will lead the orchestra in our national anthem at Symphony Hall, 75 North Second Street. Chances are the 66 musicians know that song well enough to muddle through while being conducted by a football player.
The rest of the program features Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, which isn’t one of those ditties that’s all over commercials, ringtones, or old Warner Brothers cartoons. You could hum it to us (that’s if you can hum for 45 minutes, and if we weren’t a newspaper) and we wouldn’t say, “Oh, yeah, that one.” The allegedly beloved classic will be conducted by the North Carolina Symphony’s Sarah Hicks (who is, just sayin’, also a conductor of Sting’s Symphonicities tour). Guest virtuoso Elena Urioste will assail the gnarly violin solos.
