Most notable artists practically burn their first stick-figure drawings lest they be discovered, but nationally known ceramicist Kurt Weiser is happy to admit his mistakes. “For years, the work I did in ceramics was an effort to somehow express the beautiful nature of the material,” says the ASU professor in an artist’s statement for his “Eden Revisited: The Ceramic Art of Kurt Weiser” exhibit at ASU Art Museum. “The problem was, nature and I never got along that well.”
The mid-career retrospective includes 40 of Weiser’s ceramic pieces, from an early raku-fired pot to the gorgeously painted porcelain jars he’s known for today. Sadly, despite our desire to laugh at his early efforts, there’s not one sloppy mug or crooked vase in the lot.
