In the ’80s-enamored, neon world of modern electronic music, there’s plenty of plastic, just not enough plasticity. With many DJs failing to distinguish imitation from innovation, their work falls flat and formulaic.
Enter Portland-based trio Remix Artist Collective. As their name suggests, RAC is, refreshingly, a group of remix artists. With a resume that reads like Pitchfork’s wet dream, the only thing more impressive than the Collective’s clientele is its handiwork. As a group of songwriters themselves, it’s apparent that RAC only tackles songs it actually respects. Therefore it doesn’t feel the need to reinvent the wheel, but simply to broaden the wheel a little — perhaps improving its traction. The result is often a tastefully restrained, harmonically reinterpreted rendering that is simultaneously fresh and familiar; which – gasp! — is the entire point of a remix.

At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $15,500 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.
