There’s loss, then there’s the childhood loss of a sibling, which, according to filmmaker Perry Allen, comes with peculiar complications. Besides the usual grief, there’s guilt (“Why not me?”), the loss of companionship, and the restructuring of the family dynamic. Allen explores childhood grieving and the loss of his brother in the new documentary A Moment of Light, which he’ll preview at a benefit screening at Alwun House.

A reception kicks off at 6 p.m., featuring an open-bar cocktail hour, hors d’oeuvres prepared by Chef Mark of Fountain Hills, and a live auction followed by a preview of the film. Live jazz by New York’s Sparrows and by Phoenix’s own Spencer Gefroh commences at 8. Proceeds from the $10 tickets ($5 for the concert only) will benefit both The Friends of Karen, a not-for-profit organization that supports terminally ill children and their families, and the A Moment of Light Project.

Sat., Aug. 1, 6-11 p.m., 2009
