Sky Harbor’s about to get painted by a few of our local artists.
Silvana Salcido Esparza, owner of Barrio Cafe and founder of the Calle 16 Mural Project in downtown Phoenix announced last night that the City of Phoenix approved a contract that will give her and other local restaurants spaces within Terminal 4 (more on that at Chow Bella). But she also did some colorful negotiating.
Construction on the airport terminal 4, which begins in January, will now include a mural wall at the Barrio airport spot that will be designed and completed by Calle 16 artists.
This means local muralists including Lalo Cota, Gennaro Garcia, El Moises, and others will collaborating on a large-scale piece — and Esparza says she already has a few ideas.
She’d like the mural to tell a story of Phoenix, in the style of Mexican muralist (and her inspiration for Calle 16) Diego Rivera. And if the mural is anything like the art Esparza collects, you can expect to see a low rider or two with a heavy Phoenix street-style influence.
Stay tuned for more details and check out the Calle 16 website for more information about the project.
