Super-square aspiring restaurateurs Paul and Mary Bland are broke. Rather than applying for a loan or mortgaging their house to raise money, they take a unique approach to finance: They become sex counselors who kill swingers for profit while their business partner, the janitor Raoul, dispatches the bodies. And, in Jed Feuer and Boyd Graham’s musical adaptation of Paul Bartel’s 1982 cult classic Eating Raoul, they sing about it.
The musical’s Arizona premiere comes courtesy of Nearly Naked Theatre, which wraps up its current season with the production. It’s likely that no other local troupe could (or would) do as much with a show — whose book was adapted by Bartel himself — in which dullards sing about getting deadly with frying pans and then serve the cooked remains of their victims to paying dinner guests.
Directed by Damon Dering, Nearly Naked’s production of Eating Raoul stages its premiere at 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 4, at Phoenix Theatre’s Little Theatre, 100 East McDowell Street. Performances run through June 25.
