Thanks to divas like Adele and Fiona Apple, the art of the torch song isn’t completely dead. But you’re unlikely to find a sultry songstress crooning ballads in a hazy, smoke-filled room in Phoenix, and not just because of the smoking ban.

TML Arts aims to fill that void with their Lunch Time Theater production of HOT!, a mélange of jazz and classic Broadway music at Herberger Theater Center. The show features vocals by local actress Shana Bousard, who recently performed the title role in the world premiere of Babe: An Olympian Musical.

She interprets the temperature theme loosely, focusing on tunes that get the blood — not the mercury — boiling. “The songs are sultry, sexy, or about being burned by love,” says Bousard. Her father, Joe, will tickle the ivories in accompaniment.
