There are not a whole lot of stories and plays for kids about nuclear weapons, and maybe there doesn’t need to be. A Thousand Cranes, however, is one of the best. It’s a play based on the true story of Sagako Sasaki, a girl who died of leukemia ten years after the Allied bombing of Hiroshima. In the hospital, she attempted to fold a thousand origami cranes in order to be granted her wish to get well.
Sagako and her cranes have become international symbols of peace. Childsplay presents the play Sunday, January 18, at 1 p.m. The run continues through Sunday, January 25, at 700 West Rio Salado Parkway in Tempe. Tickets are $12 to $25 at www.childsplay.org or 480-350-2822.
