Most stories are either Oedipus Rex (Hamlet, The Graduate) or The Odyssey (The Wizard of Oz, The 40-Year-Old Virgin) underneath, and that knowledge renders required lit courses much more straightforward. There’s another pervasive seasonal influence, though: Even if a play isn’t technically called A Christmas Carol, chances are some grumpy person gets his or her attitude adjusted by spirits.
The title Non-Fat Soy Peppermint Mocha Latte …with Sprinkles: A Tale of Christmas Spirit doesn’t suggest the show’s Scrooge-redeeming plot, but playwright and Brelby Theatre Company co-founder Brian Maticic’s main character, Darren, is hampered by his own ghosts while perky Spirit tries to help him expand his lonely, plain black coffee horizons.
