In his review of their 2008 self-titled album, Mike McGonigal of Pitchfork said of the Brooklyn band Crystal Stilts, “rock ‘n’ roll is theft.”
He meant it as a compliment. The ‘Stilts do not reinvent the garage pop wheel, but they do play it exceedingly well. Fitting comfortably in the lo-fi trend of recent years, the band buries their lyrics under mounds of reverb and distorted guitars. But all the obfuscation can’t hide the pop core of their music. You can sing along, even if you can’t quite make out the words.
Fans of garage pop, new wave and punk ought to be pleased by the bands showing at The Rhythm Room tonight.
