Growing up, passing clouds were a parade of endless characters and rocket ships were built from cardboard. Sarah Lowry, Madeline ffitch, and Donna Sellinger keep that spirit of imagination alive with their traveling theater group, The Missoula Oblongata. The three collaborate to script a play of seemingly outlandish ideas and then get to work, hammers in hand, to bring it to fruition via set pieces and props. Audience members are the final piece in the collaborative puzzle. In the past, attendees have been used to help bring about such wonders as launching a full-size hot-air balloon and destroying the Earth via meteor. The troupe’s latest work, The Last Hurrah of the Clementines is about “interplanetary correspondence and the moment a person knows they will never be a professional athlete.”
