Long before he worked in the creative departments of Facebook and Google, designer Ji Lee was busy erasing billboards in New York City.
“The streets of New York City are inundated with ever growing advertising, filling each and every empty wall. Hundreds of these billboards are not registered with the city, therefore they are illegal.
Although illegal, this violation is not being prosecuted by the City of New York, allowing the billboard companies to garner huge profits by cluttering our outdoor space with intrusive and ugly ads.”
In 2009, Lee, with artist Jordan Seiler and PublicAdCampaign.com orchestrated a takeover of corporate advertising in the Big City.
Their efforts were dubbed the New York Street Advertising Takeover — more than 126 billboards were white washed and transformed by 80 artists. The billboard above is Lee’s creation.
