Dennis Oppenheim

, a celebrated sculptural artist died over the weekend at the age of 72.

The Washington-born artist is known for his large-scale public art pieces in major cities around the world — one being the Garden of Evidence at the Forensics Lab and District One Police Station at Scottsdale’s McKellips Service Center (pictured above).

Oppenheim’s work often abandoned the notion of “art as a beautiful thing,” was influenced by Marcel Duchamp and Joseph Beuys, and encouraged artists to “Make things that carry with them the residue of where they have been.”

His pieces were included in local exhibitions at ASU Art Museum, Phoenix Art Museum and Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art.
